由徐克监制的《铁》是关于一个虚构的叫“铁马骝”的蒙面侠客(于荣光)与传说人物黄麒英(甄子丹)联手,为营救被官府扣押的儿子黄飞鸿,大战少林叛徒衍空和尚的故事。附带说一下,黄飞鸿确有其人,他是住在中国南方的民间英雄,这个角色从二十世纪30年代以来曾经100多次在银幕上出现,在本片中他是唯一一次由女演员曾思敏反串。
有趣的是,在《霹雳娇娃》中一场Drew Barrymore与四个特技人的打斗特别像《铁》中小兰与四个少林叛僧的战斗。原来袁和平的弟弟袁祥仁是《铁》的武指,也是《霹》的动作导演。

最后问到甄子丹对拍摄《铁》时最难忘的回忆时,他说:“在拍《铁》时,我有两个工作,演员和武术指导。李连杰在《黄飞鸿》系列中没有打出洪拳的风格,我就向袁和平建议,我的角色应该主要打洪拳。袁和平开始很怀疑,说它已经过时了,那是邵氏兄弟的电影中使用的。所以我采用了虎型和鹤型的动作,这是洪拳的标志使我看起来更像个武术行家。但实际上,该片中最精彩的动作却是由饰演我儿子的女孩来表演的。和她工作很有趣,尤其是她还是个新人,我觉得我就像是她的大哥,应该好好引导她,让她感觉舒服。而且,这也是第一次由女孩来扮演黄飞鸿啊!”

Who'd have thought that a movie Donnie Yen made almost a decade ago would give him a new film career today? He didn't. Yet since the sparkling success of Miramax's domestic theatrical release of IRON MONKEY (1993), Yen has garnished a film deal with TNT (Turner Network Television), is in final negotiations to be the lead villain in Jackie Chan's SHANGHAI KNIGHTS, will be directing a Japanese version of CHARLIE'S ANGELS, and was recruited at the last minute to fight Jet Li in Mainland China's answer to CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, the $17 million, Zhang Yimou directed, period-piece actioner HERO. Prior to departing for China, Donnie Yen and Quentin Tarantino sat down with kungfumagazine.com to speak about the metal behind the IRON MONKEY, "or" should I say, its rebirth.
What is Yen's reaction to the notoriety he is receiving from a film he did over 8 years ago? "I'm excited," Yen said. "As a martial art filmmaker from Hong Kong, our biggest wish is to have our films seen worldwide and now it can make its mark and like CROUCHING TIGER, be appreciated around the world. Asian actors always end up playing cliched kinds of roles. But if five new kung-fu movies opened up every Friday, I'd be a happy guy. America seems to have caught up with it and they brought it over to make THE MATRIX and it was cool, but I don't think they have made the association. With CROUCHING TIGER, which I'm not a big fan of, but I'm a fan of what it's done for Chinese cinema for the world view.
"I know you know that it's nothing new. Even the whole romantic angle that everyone talks about. FONG SAI YUK was more romantic. Again though, I can't help but to be a bit of a reverse snob because I'm familiar with the genre. But the reality is, it has made the cross over in a way that many Hong Kong films could not. After I saw CROUCHING TIGER, I remember coming out of the theater thinking, 'What if Yuen Woo Ping had directed the film instead of just the fights and how different it would be.' Even with the same script, it would have more humor, scatological and less pretty and that might be a benefit. But everyone walks away saying, "Oh, so romantic."
